Once
the headquarters of a Bhutanese Governor, the word kalim
means kings minister, Pong is the stronghold. The hill
people also call it Kalibong or ‘black spur’.
Kalibong in the local dialect stands Kaulim, a fibre plant used for making
paper and paper goods. This grows in abundance in this region. The hill
region of this part of West Bengal with its rich culture and religious
Heritage, the fascinating scenic beauty and wonderful flora and fauna
has immense tourist potential.
The Drive to Kalimpong down Peshoke road is a fascinating experience,
from Ghoom the road Branches off to the east, passing through virgin
forest of cryptomaria and lower, down the hill, of sal, oak and maple
overhanging ferns. The forests, far richer than on the Darjeeling side
of the hill, are interspersed by clearings growing the best quality of
Darjeeling tea; half way down the road after passing through a world
bounded with gigantic trees almost suddenly round the bend, at View Point,
a glorious view of the valley below the confluence of Rangeet and Teesta
- and towering mountains above, burst into sight. From the distant depths
comes the muffled roar of the mingling of the swiftly flowing, turbulent
blue-green waters. The road itself is an engineering feat, winding its
way through, Peshoke, and Lopchu Tea Estates, it descends 6,000 feet
in the last 19 kilometers to Teesta Bridge; as it begins it's rise, the
forest on the Kalimpong side are thinner but make up the lack with a
feast of colour in the flooring wild poinsettia and bougainvillea from
autumn to spring.

A 19th century engineering feat, this
88 km long narrow gauge steam railway was constructed between
1879 and 1881 and was responsible for the development of Darjeeling
as a hill station. It remains the best way to see the flora
and fauna of the Darjeeling hills. UNESCO has granted it world
heritage status. See the roof of the world, travel by the worlds
famous narrow gauge railway to see. |
| |
 |
The spectacular little line was
built in 1879 in order to overcome the formidable journey
by the cart road from Siliguri to Darjeeling. Franklin
Prestage at the Eastern Bengal Railway formed the Darjeeling
Himalayan Railway Company to build the 2 foot gauge
line which attains a height of 7407 feet at Ghoom from
only 500 feet above sea level at Siliguri. The little
line attains its heights by a complicated series of
such reversing stations and spiraling loops; zig zagging
across the road whilst the plains and river stretch
out beneath your feet. The journey culminates in the
famous Batasia loop with the |
|
 |
panorama of Darjeeling
and Kanchenjunga, world’s third highest mountain,
before you. The Toy Trains .themselves are
Victorian gems. Steam-hauled locomotives of the B class,
designed and buit from 1889, originals by Shaup Stewart
of Glasgow still ply their way up to the mountains.
The journey takes more than 7hrs and line passes through
green forests and tea gardens. Diesel Engine was introduced
on 21st may 2000 from Darjeeling to NJP and vice versa.

Tea and
Darjeeling are synonyms. Darjeeling tea
is world renowned for its flavor, which
is unequal by other tea producing areas
not only of India but also the world. Connoisseur
all over the world have fancied and valued
Darjeeling tea and compare it as 'Champagne
of Tea". |
The British planters
in the early 40's of the 19th century started
planting China variety of tea, smuggled
from china. Land was made available on
very nominal terms to the East India Company,
on leasehold basis for long period of above
90 years and also almost free on "Free
Hold " basis.Hordes of labourers were
recruited from Nepal to work on the Tea
Plantations. At the beginning, a few tea
makers werebrought in from China to teach
the art of tea making. Nurseries of tea
seeds were established in Lebong and other
places to distribute the plants. Fortunately
for the initial pioneering work of the hardy British
planters, |
|
 |
and suitable
climate of this China variety of tea thrived
easily. Tea requires a minimum of 50' to
60' of rainfall in a year, and for this
Darjeeling did not lack.
Darjeeling still manufactures the original method of tea manufacture
known as "Orthodox" tea manufacture as against "C.T.C." type
of manufacture adopted in the plains, now (C.T.C. stands for
Curling, Tearing, and crushing). Less withering is given and
crushing and tearing give dark, liquoring quality of tea.
